Analysis of Emile Durkheim’s “Suicide: A Study in Sociology” Using Primary and Secondary Sources
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing Emile Durkheim’s text “Suicide: A Study in Sociology”. Emile Durkheim’s text “Suicide: A Study in Sociology” (1897) was considered one of the first studies in the social sciences which used a purely scientific and methodological approach to study a social phenomenon. Suicide, for the large part, previously was considered an individual act focused upon mainly by psychologists. Durkheim however related the individual act of suicide to the cohesiveness or imbalance within society. According to Durkheim, during the age of industrialization throughout the 1800s, the incidence of suicides increased as a result of the demise of the traditional social institutions such as the church and social guilds which could not be replaced by the goals of wealth and the division of labor. Suicides were the result of an imbalance of two major social forces: social integration and moral regulation. Durkheim’s focus on the influence of social forces on the individual was highly controversial during his time as it undermined the concepts of “free will and individual moral agency”. Nevertheless, Durkheim managed to establish sociology and the social sciences as one of the major areas of study within France and his theories and methods are still considered significant in contemporary sociology, more than a century later.

Anthony Giddens’ Response to Emile Durkheim’s “Suicide”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper discussing Giddens’ response to Durkheim’s suicide. Anthony Giddens is a modern day sociologist who has proposed a new theory of “structuration” which he considers as his “concern to develop an ontological framework for the study of human social activities”. In doing this, Giddens offers a more expansive and open method in the study of society and institutions in which he hopes will offer an alternative to many of the traditional sociological methods used. Emile Durkheim in his study on “Suicide” provided one of the first systematic presentations of suicide as a sociological phenomenon. Consistent with the functionalist theories however, Durkheim offered three definitions of suicide, egoistic, altruistic and anomic, which were all functional aspects of society. Giddens believed that the functionalist argument could not possibly account for the various factors influencing suicide and within his argument and general dismisses much of Durkheim’s definitions. He also presents other misunderstandings and controversies which surrounded Durkheim’s study on suicide which somewhat validate his claim that the functionalist perspective is not complete in its relation to the discussion of suicide.

Applying Popper to Educational Research
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper applying Karl Popper’s approach to the scientific method to educational research. There is a wealth of research in education, much of it virtually worthless. For decades, it seemed that researchers turned to qualitative methods only when they could not fit hypotheses into quantitative approaches, and qualitative studies frequently were not designed well with reference to validity and reliability. The result was that method purists often regarded qualitative educational research as less than “real” science. Today’s educational research is designed much better than in the past. It still could benefit from the application of Karl Popper’s approach to the scientific method, however, which approaches validity and theory verification from a different perspective. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
