Methadone and Metabolites -Description of analyte and its’ function
[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page paper looks at the detection of methadone and it metabolites (by products). The paper begins with a description of the chemical structure of the methadone molecule and the identification of primary and secondary metabolites and their presence within the body. The paper then considers the different testing methodologies including immunoassay assay tests, thin layer chromatography, enzymatic analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The bibliography cites 6 sources.

Milk Proteins
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page paper outlines the properties of milk proteins. Whole milk contains a number of different proteins, including casein and caseinates, beta-lactoglobulin
and alpha-lactalbumin, all of which are present in unprocessed milk and most commercial milk products. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Molecular Mixtures and Cross-Membrane Transport
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page review of “Drug Delivery: Breaching the Membrane”, an article by Joe Alper published in the May 3, 2002 edition of “Science”. Alper’s (2002) research concentrates on the cell membrane and the manner in which cross-membrane transport occurs, specifically the manner in which membrane-bound protein transporters function to allow various nutrients and hormones across. Alper’s paper adds insight to both the structure and function of the cell membrane and its components and how each relates to the molecular structure of the body’s complex mixture of chemicals. No additional sources are listed.

Molecular Modeling: Conformation Analysis and Energy Minimization
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper discussing these two aspects of computational chemistry. The next generation of narrowly-targeted drugs seems to be about to appear over the horizon. Conformation analysis and molecular modeling play increasing roles in new drug research. Conformation is important in that it can change according to its environment; energy levels affect action. Drug developers need to discover the most effective conformation, but they also need to be able to retain that conformation despite conditions external to the molecule. Bibliography lists 7 sources. Includes a Newman projection diagram.

MuD Bacteriophage & Operon in Gene Fusion
[ send me this paper ]
10 page paper. Despite the fact that gene fusion has been with us for years, there is still significant opposition in the popular press to 'genetic engineering.' Myriad agents are used to accomplish delivery of genetic factors to specific gene sites, many of which are written of extensively in the literature. One that is not written of quite as much as the others is the MuD bacteriophage. Despite all the work that has been done in gene fusion and gene mapping, the ultimate foreseeable value lies not in science-fiction tales of cloning, but rather in understanding some of the diseases with which gene fusion could be either alleviated or cured. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Multi-Step Synthesis of Benzilic Acid
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page laboratory study considers the multi-step synthesis process in the creation of benzilic acid. The project proposes the use of benzaldehyde and potassium cyanide and the focus on the varied steps in order to synthesize benzilic acid. This study reviews the procedures, outlines the findings relative to this process, and produces some data regarding the process in order to show the impacts of each step in the process. The multi-step synthesis approach and the use of specific agents are central to the views created in this study. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Nitrogen Cycle
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that defines, analyzes the current situation and provides an overview of actual and potential solutions to the problems caused by the nitrogen glut. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
Filename: Nitrocyc.wps
Organometallic Compounds
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page overview of the history of and uses for this broad range of highly reactive compounds so often used as catalysts for many of the processes involved in products ranging in function from containing milk to operating supercomputers. The paper discusses carbonyl cations and anions, hydroformylation and polyalkene polymerization. The entire area of organometallic compounds has been important for decades, but it has been only recently that new discoveries and realization of new uses for old processes has led to increasing benefits so numerous they appear to be limited only by our ability to find them. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Perfume; In Nutshell
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page paper examines the subject of parfume. Included are descriptions of the types of perfume, the terms used in the perfume industry, how perfume is formulated and the way that it is described and perceived in the industry and by consumers. The bibliography cites 5 sources.

Pheromone's in Insects
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page paper looks at pheromones, what they are, how they work, their discovery and how they might be used. The chemical compounds are discussed and the use of the synthetic chemicals as a replacement for pesticides is discussed. The bibliography cites 10 sources.

Planet Hunters May Rival Indiana Jones.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) "Or it might have formed from a large burp
of matter from its host star, or maybe a passing
star just left a chunk of itself behind at some time in the past, "Marcy said. "It may even have moons around it, but I just don't know what to call it." Sounds like conversation from a discarded sci-fi novel, doesn't it? How about that is real conversation from January of this year (2001). Geoffrey Marcy of the University of California, at Berkeley, calls himself a "planet hunter." He and his team have located "something,"123 light-years from Earth, is indeed a planet, it would be the largest ever detected. This guy is so big we don't know what to call it," Marcy said.
Bibliography lists 3 sources and 2 visuals of
expoplanets.

Plant Physiology: The Role of Heat and Auxin Regulation
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the role of auxin in plant physiology. Concentrates on the work with Arabidopsis thaliana but ties this research into other plant species and the effects of fire on the physiology of some of these species. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Plastics Design and Manufacturing
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing gains and persistent
assumptions. Many of the problems attributed to manufacture are not those of the manufacturing process, but rather deficiency in design. Of course products need to be envisioned before they can be produced, but a failing of many manufacturing engineers is that of not approaching their design duties from a variety of perspectives, including manufacturing. This paper describes and analyzes a circuit board assembly line, assesses the
evolution of the manufacturing of three-prong electrical plugs and speculates on the type of
plastic that could be used in manufacturing processes following the path of the processes in
which steel is produced. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Polymers for Use in Controlled-Release Drug Delivery Systems
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing the role of polymers in controlled-release drug delivery systems. Includes six illustrations and graphs. Bibliography includes eight sources.

Radon: A Colorless, Odorless, Tasteless Gas
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page description of the gas radon. Provides the history of its discovery as well as information on the molecular characteristics of the gas, the various isotopes, and potential threats to human health. Concludes that while there are valid and useful application of radon, it is a gas which presents a number of concerns. The most obvious of these are found in association with mining for uranium and in toxic waste dumps. Perhaps one of the most concerning aspects of radon overall, however, is its insidious infiltration into our homes and buildings. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Reducing Green House Gas Emissions in Irish Dairy Farming
[ send me this paper ]
There is little doubt that green house gases need to be reduced. This 15 page paper summarizes an article that assesses the potential of different dairy herd management systems to reduce the direct and indirect green house gas emissions. The reseach also looked at the impact on profit levels. The paper summarises the findings of the reseach and then offers a neutral opinion on the reseach. The bibliography cites 1 source.
