Comparison Of Three Journal Articles

A 5 page comparison of psychological journal articles addressing extroversion and introversion. Three articles were selected, two from The Journal of Psychology and one from The Journal of Genetic Psychology. The first discussed is an investigation of the reliability of models of determining general personality traits. The second attempts to establish a link between introversion and depression; the third investigates the possibility of a statistical basis for personality traits as indicated by the signs of the zodiac. All of the studies seem to be designed as well as they could be in their areas of investigation, but all seem to conclude that apart from neurosis of either introversion or extroversion, the existence and the description within the individual remains subjective and its definition elusive.

Critique of “Born Unwanted: Observations from the Prague Study”

A 5 page paper critiquing a longitudinal study of children born of unwanted pregnancies. David, Dytrych and Matejcek (2003) report on a large and long-term study designed to assess the consequences of being born unwanted, expressed in terms of sound mental health in adulthood. The authors identified 220 children born between 1961 and 1963 in Prague, Czech Republic. All of these study children were born of women who had sought and been denied an abortion at least twice for the pregnancy that produced the study subject. Depression And Diabetes: Article Reviews

10 pages in length. The relationship between diabetes and depression is an unmistakable - and perhaps unavoidable - occurrence of comorbidity. Each of these articles illustrates the importance of patient self-care and appropriate life choices as a means by which to offset the prevalence toward the comorbidity of depression and diabetes. While one study seeks to determine the most provoking factors that draw out the tendency toward both major and minor depression, another finds no more correlation between depression and diabetes than there is with those who do not have diabetes. Similarly, a third study sought to determine if those with either major depression or diabetes were more or less functionally disabled than those with diabetes and comorbid major depression. Another study examines how different locale and ethic composition impacts comorbidity, while the final article provides a broad overview of how depression and diabetes are often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated. Developmental Psychology: Research on Adaptation

This is an 8 page paper discussing research on adaptation in developmental psychology. Within the field of psychology, adaptation describes “the process of change in organisms or species to accommodate to a particular environment, enabling their survival”. From a developmental, biological and sociological level, there are considered to be two main types of adaptive behavior: closed programs which basically are transmitted from generation to generation and remain relatively unchanged; and, open genetic programs which are greatly influenced from environmental factors (Gale, 2001). In addition, adaptation can be discussed in terms of individuals or in terms of how groups adapt to new environments. Often individual adaptation is studied in regards to the biological or physiological components which are carried from generation to generation and largely these factors are inflexible and remain relatively unchanged. However, there are many studies which examine how social or environmental factors can also affect adaptive behavior and increase the survival in new situations. These studies examine the cultural, family and socioeconomic relationships in groups and individuals and indicate that while initially some individuals may not be flexible or adaptive to new environments, positive adaptation factors such as strong culture bonds, strong family relationships and resilience can increase adaptability in individuals suggesting that individuals are flexible and can be highly adaptive in new environments; factors which increase their chance of survival.
