Therapeutic Containment: Techniques and Application
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper discussing therapeutic containment. Therapeutic containment is a controlled and structured psychiatric therapy to help calm and stabilize children who experience anxiety, tantrums, insecurity or trauma. The idea for therapeutic containment is to provide the child with a temporary environment which will allow him to calm himself and feel safe and secure. Therapeutic containment is meant to be non-punitive and thus each technique is to allow temporary relief for the child in the hopes that the child will learn to internalize the feelings of containment into maturity. Containment techniques and skills include space manipulation in which children can be given a place to have a “time-out” if needed, routine management which will provide a structured environment in addition to the establishment of caretaker teamwork, rules, and at times, physical containment. Physical containment varies according to the child as holding a child who is upset may provide a calming effect on some, children who have been traumatized react more positively to containment techniques which involve some distance from adults. The reassurance therapeutic containment can give a child is beneficial to allowing the child time to experience feelings of safety and security needed in development.

Treatments for Schizophrenia: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Social Skills Training, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and Medication
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing some treatments for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is considered a life-long illness in which individuals experience delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and/or catatonic behavior among other symptoms. Without treatment, schizophrenics may be unable to cope with everyday experiences and this can negatively affect their social relationships, family function and occupational opportunities. Fortunately, there are several types of treatment which include anti-psychotic medications, cognitive-behavioral therapy, social skills training and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) among others. While almost all treatments report more success in combination with medication, medication alone cannot help individuals overcome the behaviors often associated with everyday stresses. From this perspective, cognitive behavioral therapy and social skills training are the most beneficial and in cases of severe depression accompanying schizophrenia, ECT has been reported to be extremely beneficial.
