Multiple Personality Disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder)
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Multiple Personality Disorder. Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) or as it is now known Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a psychiatric disorder in which an individual experiences a dissociation with memories and in doing so creates two or more separate personalities. Historically, MPD was recorded as different forms of hysteria and previous to 1973, fewer than 50 cases were documented. Since 1973 however, the year that the popular best seller “Sybil” was published, over 40,000 cases of MPD have been reported in North America alone. Many critics still argue as to whether or not MPD is a “real” disorder or whether or not it has been “constructed” from a social perspective during therapy. Nevertheless, within the last 25 years, MPD/DID has been associated with childhood sexual abuse and traditional therapies have been used to try and recovery memories of a patient’s childhood in an attempt to uncover the initial trauma to the patient which led to the disorder. Once memories have been recovered, therapists then try and reconstruct the patient’s dominant personality. Regardless of the controversy which has surrounded MPD/DID, most researchers still attest that whether or not the disorder has been constructed by the patient or the therapist, the disorder and dissociation is still very real to the patient and must be treated through therapy.
