Dialectical Behavior Therapy
[ send me this paper ]
11 pages in length. The essential underpinning of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a discussion that involves the overall concepts of life's purpose and meaning, a dialogue that focuses upon compensating for opposites such as balance/imbalance, thesis/antithesis (Marra, 2005). It also incorporates the painful components of conflict and opposition inasmuch as "the needs of the person are frequently in conflict with the demand characteristics and contingencies of the environment at the moment" (Marra, 2005, p. 84). Dialectical behavior therapy is particularly associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), an illness primarily caused by a defect in early development and attachment. [ send me this paper ]
A 3 page summary of a study article. In their article "Self Structure and Childhood Maltreatment: Successful Compartmentalization and the Struggle of Integration," Researchers C.J. Showers, V. Zeigler-Hill and A. Limke report on their May, 2006 study, which examined psychological self-structure (that is, compartmentalization, self-complexity and differential importance) among college student participants who self-report maltreatment occurring prior to age 15. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between the three features of self-structure (listed above) in subjects who may tend to have significantly negative self-images due to maltreatment in childhood, which can present an obstacle to traditional forms of coping (Showers, Zeigler and Limke, 2006). Emotional Numbness
[ send me this paper ]
14 pages in length. Suppression of feelings is a common human approach to dealing with unpleasant situations. The extent to which Andrew has mastered this defense mechanism is both grand and far-reaching; that he shuts down in order to get through the psychological pain inherent to relationship breakups speaks to his tendency to become emotionally numb until that pain has subsided. Those who experience post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) experience similar responses after going through distressing events. The prominent emotion for Andrew is disassociation - the ability to detach from normally occurring feelings - which is illustrated by his ability to shut down his emotions and remain that way until the perceived threat of painful feelings is not longer looming. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
