Too many times anxiety disorders are mistaken for laziness such as when a teenager refuses to go to school. This paper gives an overview of anxiety disorders and how family members can help by encouraging the patient to talk about their feelings. They can also be aware that all of the family members are profoundly affected and they should learn all that they can about the illness in order to help the family cope together as a unit. This is a 10 page paper discussing all the aspects of anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is a eating disorder which is a considered the refusal by an individual to maintain normal body weight but instead loses weight either by diet, exercise or purging with an attempt to obtain an ideal body weight; however, the individual never has the perception of reaching that ideal weight. Anorexia causes severe physical damage and in many cases may result in death. The largest portion of the population affected by anorexia is teenage girls and if untreated can lead to a 20% morality rate. Treatment of the disease decreases the mortality rate to 1 to 2% but treatment is a difficult and long process. While 60% of those treated enjoy a full recovery, 20% continue with the disease and the other 20% relapse back into the disease. Treatments proven to be the most successful are those which combine elements of hospitalization, psychological counseling on individual, group, family and support levels and some pharmacological treatments to decrease depression.
