Emile Zola/Nana
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page essay that discusses how Emile Zola expects the reader to perceive the character if his heroine in Nana. The writer argues that Nana is Emile Zola's expose of the decadence of France's late Second Empire period and that it may seem, at first glance, to be a nineteenth century version of Sex in the City, as his heroine is rapacious, a sexually amoral creature who is the inevitable result of a family that was ravaged by alcoholism and abuse. The context of the novel makes it clear that Zola portrays Nana as an indictment against late nineteenth century French society and the societal structures that spawned and shaped her to be an archetypal destructive force for evil rather than an actual person. Enlightenment Literature/Candide
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that discusses how Voltaire's Candide exemplifies the Enlightenment. Burns (1969) asserts that Voltaire "epitomized the eighteenth century period known as the Enlightenment in a manner similar to the way that "Luther epitomized the Reformation or Leonardo da Vinci did the Italian Renaissance" (Burns, 1969, p. 571). It was Voltaire who popularized the scientific and political theories of John Locke and Isaac Newton, as he promoted the Enlightenment perspective that the natural world can be understood via the use of reason. Voltaire's Candide (1759) is representative of his Enlightenment philosophy and shows the extent to which this philosophy differed radically from what came before it. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Feminism And Madame de Stael
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. It is quite appropriate to speak of the connection between Madame de Stael and the notion of feminism in nineteenth-century French literature. Indeed, one of the most powerful books on feminist conjecture is that of Corinne, a story Madame de Stael wrote about an aristocratic heroine who is in constant clash with the society around her. This approach to female strength was not a course many writers braved during this time; rather, to put forth the struggles inherent to gender issues was a bold statement about the patriarchal influence of the period. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Flaubert, Swift Comparison
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that compares 2 works. Jonathan Swift penned his satirical masterpiece, “A Modest proposal in 1729. Roughly a century later, Gustave Flaubert wrote “A Simple Heart” (also known as “A Simple Soul”). While considerably time separates these two works, examination of the principal theme addressed by both Swift and Flaubert demonstrates that the attitude of the middle and upper class that was directed towards the common people had not appreciably changed over the course of the intervening century. The common theme is the way in which the European upper classes regarded the working class. Both Flaubert and Swift indicate that the upper classes tended to objectify those who labored on their behalf, as working people, the poor, and their servants were viewed as being less than fully human. No additional sources cited.

Flaubert/Emma Bovary
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that discusses the characterization of Emma Bovary in Gustave Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary. This novel recounts the life and death a beautiful young woman who is frustrated in her unrealistic search for romantic love. Flaubert portrays Emma Bovary as lacking in all the qualities that would have qualified her a true Romantic. She is concerned with appearances rather than inner values; sensual rather than spiritual; emotional but not with the accompany tempering quality of being warm-hearted. In the hands of a less-skilled writer, Emma might have come across as merely supercilious and shallow; however, Flaubert's treatment of her is much more sympathetic as the reader sees her against the backdrop of her era, which suggests that rather putting all the blame directly on Emma for her shortcomings, she is the logical outcome of her culture. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

These causes include Emma’s convent education and her passion for Romance novels, which is a habit she continued into adulthood. Also in childhood, the death of her mother and the occupation of her father influenced her environment, as did the double standards of the nineteenth century in regards to the social opportunities and expectations of women and men. No additional sources cited.
