This day and age of tremendous technological breakthroughs continue to make the challenge that much easier with a combination of preventive and curative treatments. However, the ease with which these treatments are so effective and readily available has created a problem in and of itself: Today's children are severely overmedicated. One treatment in particular that has caused a great deal of the problem is antibiotics, inasmuch as pediatricians often prescribe this so-called "cure all" medication without requiring a culture. This is a 6 page review of the current literature available on psychotropic medications. Five articles are discussed. The review of the literature available about the concerns, usage and effects of psychotropic medication is fairly extensive. Researchers have examined use in children, adolescents and adults as well as in pregnant women. Many of the articles provide good details on the different medications available as well as their contraindications and side effects. Although the physiological mechanisms are not completely analyzed yet in the field of medicine psychotropic drugs are used widely across the country. In fact, many critics have concluded that children have been overly prescribed medications as in the case of Ritalin, the most common psychotropic medication prescribed for children which has increased in usage by over 700 percent in the last ten years.
