Is Care in the Community Working?
[ send me this paper ]
In 1990 in the United Kingdom the National Health Service and Community Care Act 1990 laid out plans to integrate individuals with learning disabilities back into the community, even if they had been institutionalised for many years. Further guidelines were given five years later in "Signposts for Success". The policy has been greeted with mixed responses, and the results in some instances have been controversial. This 5 page paper looks at the current situation and discusses the concepts of care and partnership in the care of those with learning disabilities in relation to these two aspects. Is Formal Education Too Early
[ send me this paper ]
An 11 page paper. There is a significant amount of pressure to begin children in formal education programs younger and younger. For this essay, a 'formal education program' is defined as any systematic early childhood education program where children receive any type of rating on cognitive performance, even reciting their numbers or the alphabet. It seems to make sense to think that sending children to formal programs at early ages would be detrimental to them. The literature belies this supposition, however, in fact, there is an ever-increasing amount of literature that demonstrates the short- and long-term benefits of very early education. This essay discusses the issues and presents the literature. The writer does comment on the practice of using standardized tests with four-year-olds. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

J.Anthony Lukas: Common Ground, A Turbulent Decade in the Lives
of Three American Families. (1985)
[ send me this paper ]
(5pp) Common Ground: covering a great deal more
than its subtitle suggests, is a huge non-fiction
study of Boston in the 1970's, when it was under
the pressure of court-ordered busing to achieve
school desegregation. The three families J. Anthony
Lukas focuses on include only a handful of the
hundreds of people in a multilayered account of the
moral fabric of a city and the vastly different
social universes of its neighborhoods. Eventually
the turmoil surrounding the desegregation efforts
is seen in the context of history, not just
national history, or that of Boston, but the
history of the little villages cities are made up
of, and in many cases even the histories of
individuals.

Job Satisfaction of Assistant Principals in Schools
[ send me this paper ]
This 15 page paper provides an overview of this issue. Job satisfaction is an imperative part of retaining highly qualified employees. Educational institutions, including public school districts, have recognized the need to assess job satisfaction in correlation with job performance and relative to their capacity to retain their professional staff. Employee satisfaction, though, is a complex issue. A number of different types of human resource management systems have been put into place in an effort to improve employee satisfaction, especially among administrative employees, including shorter work days, shorter work weeks, and improvements in compensation packages, clearer job descriptions and increasing use of team approaches. Katherine Paterson’s “The Great Gilly Hopkins”: Its Application to Learning about Learning Disabilities
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing how Katherine Paterson’s novel “The Great Gilly Hopkins” is beneficial in the educational system. Katherine Paterson’s novel “The Great Gilly Hopkins” has become one of the most recommended reading materials within middle schools across North America in its ability to address the character of Gilly who has undergone several transitions throughout the foster care system and is considered an example of a child with reactive attachment disorder (RAD). The novel was written for youths aged 9-12 (the central character, Gilly is 11) and within the classroom environment has allowed teachers to introduce mature and realistic subject matter to their students which will lead to a better understanding and tolerance of children who are not from traditional, supportive family environments and who have developed mechanisms or defensive behaviors which allow them to cope with their situation.

Kinesics
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 15 page paper discussing the studies found regarding kinesics. Kinesics, or the study of body language in nonverbal communication, is a term which was first applied to early anthropological studies and was used in regards to furthering the study of linguistics. Recently however, researchers have used the study of kinesics in regards to its importance in communication in business, education, gender relations, health care and other disciplines which rely upon clear and precise understanding in a communication environment. Kinesics is also used on other non-traditional socio-cultural disciplines such as art and multi-media in the presentation of materials. Generally however, studies in kinesics are “grouped” within the larger area of non-verbal communication including proxemics (spatial relations), haptics (touching behavior), oculesics (eye contact styles), vocalics (vocal cures), chronemics (use of time), and objectics (use of clothes, color and objects) among others and very few studies now relate primarily to kinesics separately which in some aspects is understandable since the complete process of communication involves a balance between the understanding of all of these elements in addition to the verbal and content factors within communication.
