Criminal Profiling
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing the development and process of criminal profiling. As much art as science, the end goal of the process of criminal profiling is to identify and assess all of the information available about a crime or criminal so that all of that information can be used to locate, arrest and successfully prosecute those who would engage in violent crime. Criminal profiling is an invaluable tool for defining what investigators should be searching for in terms of suspects. As with any other operational advance, it still must be used properly if it is to return the proper results. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Data Collection and the New York Police Department -- “The NY-911
Demonstration Project”
[ send me this paper ]
This 26 page report discusses the
design, implementation, and analysis of a survey regarding the
New York Police Department’s emergency 911 service. A “super 911”
emergency system was installed in 1996 at the NYPD’s Metro Tech
Complex located in Brooklyn. The new system was described at that
time as the largest and most complex in the world. “In 1995, ten
million calls were made to New York City’s 911 system. Police
officials say that number increases by 10 to 12 percent each
year. Nonetheless, in the years since its installation, there
have been a number of failures of the system, repeated
complaints, and the concern that despite the system’s complexity,
it still has a number of flaws -- primarily in terms of the human

Deferred Retirement Option Plan as a Recruiting and Retention Tool for the New York Police Department

Virtually every organization faces challenges in retaining experienced, knowledgeable employees while also attracting high-quality individuals to join the organization. The same is true for the NYPD, but with a twist. Programs encouraging early retirement years ago currently are draining the NYPD of its most experienced police officers, while negative stereotypes associated with police work hamper efforts to recruit officer candidates. The Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) is presented here as a solution to each problem, while also saving the city of New York millions per month. Bibliography lists 35 sources, includes an abstract and table of contents.

Digital And Psychological Profiling Of Cyber Crime
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Witnesses are often the single most important elements of securing a conviction or realizing an acquittal; without these observers to testify as to what they saw, heard or know, myriad court cases would either go unsolved or erroneously resolved. With the technological age, however, has come an entirely different type of witness who - by virtue of its unique position to collect incriminating data - does not have the capacity to lie. Computers have become some of the most critical tools law enforcement agencies have encountered, inasmuch as they provide a clear-cut path to criminals who use them as cyber weapons. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

Discrimination Of Women In The Policing And Probation Fields: Review Of Literature
[ send me this paper ]
20 pages in length. The female gender is no stranger among the various ranks of America's police force, inasmuch as their presence has been an integral component of law enforcement since 1913; however, the capacity in which they have served these past ninety years has long been a bone of contention with regard to issues of gender inequity. House (1993) notes how it was not until the 1970s that women were upgraded to more expansive roles within the department, representing a significant departure from the standard social and administrative work to which they were relegated. With the 1972 graduation of the nation's first female FBI agents came an altogether different perspective of women on the police force; however, House (1993) points out that even though this precedence-setting event helped to increase the number of policewomen from just over three thousand to approximately twenty-eight hundred between 1971 and 1990, it has done little to improve promotions or decrease discrimination worldwide. Bibliography lists 20 sources.
