The Jamaican Creole Language: Its History and Linguistic Distinctions
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing the Jamaican Creole language. The Jamaican Creole language, also known as Western Caribbean English, has been a unique language since the beginning of the 19th century although is it still only officially linguistically classified along with Creole and Pidgin languages as “language isolate, unclassified” with the International Linguistics Center in Dallas, Texas. Because of its unique elements which differentiate it from Standard English in the areas of linguistic phonology, morphology, semantics and pragmatics, linguists believe that it should not be considered a “dialect” but should be reclassified as a “nation-language”. Not only spoken in Jamaica, Jamaican Creole is also spoken in Columbia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. Jamaican is also influencing cultures and societies around the globe as large communities of West Indians who reside in countries such as Canada and the United States not only bring their language to the culture but also elements of their music, mannerism and lifestyle which are being adopted by neighboring communities. The Jamaican language is considered an excellent example of the many languages which are participating in the “Latinization” of the English language and are important in the linguistic study of the evolution of language. Includes an outline.

The Relationship Between Orthography And Pronunciation In L1 And L2 Phonology
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. Proper spelling and word pronunciation are intrinsically associated with L1 and L2 speech sounds and language acquisition due to the nature of how representations of orthography impact the functioning of L1 learners within the context of phonological awareness tasks; as such, L2 learners are therefore also affected by this association when striving to grasp pronunciation. Moreover, the influence of metalinguistic awareness - "a construct, theory or model to explain the interaction between language and written text" (Mora, 2008), is most prominently found in the ongoing literacy development of bilingual learners. One of the most recognized ways in which this is demonstrated is through code switching, a blending of two languages - L1 & L2 - that developed as a multicultural survival instinct. This may occur for a number of reasons, but a form of cultural assimilation is present. The Social and Economic Implications of Grammar
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the importance of grammar in achieving success in our modern world. Uses the example of the contemporary use of ebonics among African Americans to illustrate the contention that our grammar and that of others with whom we interact can impact the way we do business and even determine our successes or failure in particular endeavors. While there are positive aspects of distinctions in the way in which we use grammar, all too often an individual’s inability to utilize grammar in a manner which is in step with societal expectation is tied to that individual’s lack of education or appropriate world experiences. That lack directly translates into poor performance in both the social and economic setting. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

The Speech of General Colin Powell before the Republican
National Convention
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper discussing the speech that General Colin
Powell made regarding the state of education in the US prior to the official nomination of
George W. Bush as the Republican candidate for the 2000 presidential election. It is a
wonderful and rousing speech, but the greatest evidence of the effectiveness of General
Powell's speech does not lie with those who agree to his statements, but rather with those
who agree with little or none of it. The biting sarcasm that at least one critic managed to
convey speaks more as to the effectiveness of General Powell's speech than could anyone
who agrees with his statements. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
