Economic Benefits of the Falkirk Wheel
[ send me this paper ]
A 28 page paper discussing the restoration of centuries-old canals in Central Scotland and the creation of the Falkirk Wheel linking two of those canals, as well as the resulting rejuvenation of the economy of Central Scotland. The planners establishing the method by which the Project would take on various aspects of the overall plan appear to have approached their responsibilities systematically and with precision, with a view to the future. They also appear to have a firm idea of the manner in which growth arises from growth. Commercial development surrounding reclamation of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals, plus the associated creation of the Falkirk Wheel, has all the appearances of enabling sustainable economic growth in Central Scotland that likely would not have been possible otherwise. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Egyptian Architecture During the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the changes in Egyptian architecture during the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms. During the Old Kingdom in Egypt an enormous amount of royal architectural triumphs were built including the great pyramids at Giza. The architecture of Egypt seems mostly to reflect the strength of the kingdoms at the time. The start of the Old Kingdom was the first dynasty (the Third Dynasty) to see the unification of the country under one monarch. This time also saw a great amount of prosperity. The kings during this period were equal to the gods and the monuments which were erected symbolized this. The tombs which existed during the first and second dynasties were eventually out built by first the step pyramids and then the geometric pyramids which are still considered wonders of the world today. The times during the Middle and New Kingdoms were somewhat more unstable and the kings did not have complete sovereignty over the land and the sizes of the monuments also diminished. During the Middle Kingdom elaborate temples were erected for the various cults of the gods. During the time of the Warrior Kings and the Ramses in the New Kingdom, the kings were considered powerful and many monuments and temples were erected to honor them however they were not equated with the gods and never received god-like structures comparable with the pyramids. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Emergence Of Pleasure Quarters In New Tokyo Architecture
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Architecture – and its appreciation – is a forever evolving entity. While myriad styles appear original in nature, more often than not they can be traced to influences from other cultures or periods with little more than a facelift attached. The recent influx of Tokyo's pleasure quarters has given way to what might appear to be a fresh approach to Japanese architecture when in reality this throwing-caution-to-the-wind architectural style is wholly influenced by Western culture and Japan's own historical past. Even though the Western vocabulary would not readily embrace pleasure quarters as reflecting anything remotely architectural in nature, the entire artistic movement is both modernistic and well received by contemporary and traditional Japanese alike. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Environmentally Friendly, Sustainable And Intelligent Buildings
[ send me this paper ]
12 pages in length. Unarguably, the world's energy demand has increased as a direct relation to the continual rise in global population. What this translates to in correlating statistics is that energy demands throughout the past half century have tripled, the global economy has quintupled and the world population increased twofold (Anonymous, 1997). In the not-too-distant future - with regard to history's timeline - there will come a point when fossil fuels will be depleted and humans will be forced to find alternative sources with which to power such equipment as heating/cooling units and myriad others that utilize conventional energy choices in order to create buildings that are highly efficient, comfortable, green, safe and secure environments. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
